I recently retired, and I hope to enjoy this new chapter in my life, but this seems impossible. President Trump’s nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court threatens much that I care about.

The health of an entire generation will be negatively impacted if Kavanaugh is appointed to the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh is a severe threat to the Affordable Care Act, women’s health, Medicare, and Medicaid. Before, the ACA insurance companies could pick and choose who they wanted to cover and would deny many people with pre-existing conditions. The ACA saves lives, and the Trump Administration is trying to dismantle the very lifelines on which so many people rely. Medicaid benefits one in five people, helping to provide necessary care to many in the country. These horrific decisions by those in power are seriously impacting those all around us.

President Trump is working to destroy social programs by any means necessary – and his next attempt is through the Supreme Court. Sen. Susan Collins has helped protect health care in the past, and I ask her to do the same again with her vote on Trump’s Supreme Court nominee. I urge Sen. Collins to vote against Kavanaugh’s appointment, and instead support someone who will protect the ACA, Medicaid, women’s rights, SNAP benefits and countless other important issues.
