RUMFORD — Nichole Richard has held car shows at Abbott Farm Plaza on Route 2 in Rumford for the past four years.

She “wanted to do something fun for the locals,” she said Wednesday.

But this year, her Dollar Tree co-worker Shaunna Lamontagne and her friend Brenda Neider encouraged her to do something different. Something that would involve motorcycles instead of cars and that would also help the community.

So this Saturday, a motorcycle show — Riding for a Cause — is planned for Dollar Tree Plaza in Rumford.

The three women decided the Praise Assembly of God Church food bank in Rumford and Santa’s Helpers, another Rumford charity, will be the beneficiaries of funds coming from ticket sales.

“We’re giving to Santa’s Helpers and giving to the church (food bank) because they’re also helping people,” Neider said. “It revolves around the kids. The kids need a lot more than their parents can give them.”

Another bonus of the motorcycle show will be a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle raffle. Tickets for the raffle are $20 per ticket, with proceeds going to Special Olympics Maine.

Rumford police Sgt. Doug Maifeld is supplying the tickets through the Special Olympics. He has been involved with fundraising for the organization throughout his 30-year career in law enforcement.

“We try to raise money for the (Special Olympics) Torch Run every year,” Maifeld said.

Along with selling items through local businesses to raise money for the Special Olympics, Maine law enforcement agencies receive 2,500 raffle tickets every year for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

“We try to sell most of (the tickets),” Maifeld said., “and whatever goes above the cost of the bike goes to Special Olympics in our area and throughout the state.” 

The Harley-Davidson motorcycle raffle winner will be chosen in October in Portland.

Tickets can be purchased at the Riding for a Cause bike show Saturday, at the Rumford police station or on the Police Department’s Facebook page.

Bikers can register their motorcycles at the Rumford Dollar Tree for $10 before Saturday or by contacting Richard at 418-5805.

Registration is $15 on Saturday.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three bikes picked by people at the event, and the top prize is a two-night stay at the River View Resort in Bethel.

The Riding for a Cause bike show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Abbott Farm Plaza on Route 2 in Rumford.

The event will include food, vendors, children’s games, face painting and Chinese auction items, including a Dustin Pedroia-autographed photograph. Pedroia is the second baseman for the Boston Red Sox.
