BETHEL — Team Hailey Hugs will kick off the 2nd Annual Maine Goes Gold For Childhood Cancer Awareness on Sept. 1 at the Bethel Common.

Highlights include a pancake breakfast, a morning parade, music morning to evening, a live auction and a silent auction. There will be pony rides, clowns, fairies, princesses, fire performers, Mt. Drew and His Animals Too, a motorcycle run, food, vendors and fireworks at The Bethel Inn Resort at 9:30 p.m.

Team Hailey Hugs was formed in honor of Hailey Steward, 10, of Bethel, who died Sept. 23, 2017, almost five years after being diagnosed with leukemia. The nonprofit organization has four main purposes:

• Supporting families financially while their child faces cancer treatment;

• Supporting local hospitals, facilities and research clinics by offering financial assistance for items needed by families during hospital stays;

• Supporting legislation to raise awareness and funds for children with cancer; and

• Organizing and managing events to fund the organization’s efforts.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and gold ribbons are an internationally recognized symbol of childhood cancer.
