PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — If Mainers Will Kannegieser and Jack Wyman want to play more rounds on a couple of the country’s most picturesque golf courses then they have some work to do.
Both players were far behind the leaders after the first round of the United States Amateur Championship on Monday.
Kannegieser, of Minot, shot a 7-over 78 playing at Pebble Beach Golf Links, while Wyman, who lives in South Freeport and is the two-time defending Maine Amateur champion, shot a 10-over 82 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.
The first-round leaders are New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier and South Carolina’s Trevor Phillips, who both shot 4-under-par. Hillier had a 67 at Pebble Beach, while Phillips played Spyglass Hill in 68 shots.
The field of 312 players will be whittled down to 64 after two rounds, with the tournament switching from stroke play to match play for the final five days.
Kannegieser is in a tie for 236th place, and Wyman is tied for 283rd. The top 64 were all 1-over or better at the end of the first round.
