SABATTUS — The Board of Selectmen announced Tuesday it will hold a special town meeting Tuesday, Sept. 4, for the town to vote on special project bonds.
Voters approved financing a large roads project and demolition of Webster Mill at the annual town meeting in May, but now that a specific financer and the cost have been determined, the town’s bond attorney recommended holding a town meeting to approve the spending.
At its previous meeting, the board awarded the road financing bond and Webster Mill financing bond to Machias Savings Bank.
Town Manager Anthony Ward said the town’s attorney is requiring a vote before he will sign off on the bonds. He also said there will need to be at least 25 residents who vote.
The special town meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Town Office.
The board also discussed a possible toll booth policy within the town. In this case, a toll booth is referring to fundraisers where people stand in the road and ask for money, usually nonprofit organizations.
Selectman Chair Mark Duquette said the board must decide if it will continue to allow such fundraising.
The board decided to table that discussion until its Sept. 18 meeting, when the town’s fire chief and nonprofit leaders will present their thoughts and suggest policies.
“I think it’s a good idea to have them all here to get their ideas,” Duquette said.
