CANTON — Selectmen announced Thursday evening that the tax rate for 2018-19 is expected to drop for the fifth consecutive year.

The maximum tax rate would be $17.53, Selectman Rob Walker said. “That’s $2 and 30-some-odd cents” less than last year, he said.

The current rate is $19.85 per $1,000 of property valuation.

“Taxes are going down in the town of Canton for the fifth consecutive year,” Selectman Don Hutchins said. “So, tell all of your friends to move to Canton. We have a Big Apple, we have a Dunkin’ Donuts, and our tax rates are going through the floor.”

The board expects to decide the rate at its meeting Sept. 13.

In other business, selectmen asked Administrative Assistant Tina Cagle to send a letter to property owners at the end of Canton Mountain Road to ask them to allow town vehicles to turn around on their property.

“Last year, I had to back all the way down over the hill down to Greniers’ to plow it and it takes a long time,” Road Foreman Paul McKenna said.

Selectmen also asked residents at Thursday’s meeting to spread the word that they need someone to clear sod from sidewalks on Main Street. “Just ask around, maybe somebody knows somebody, a kid that’s looking for a job on a weekend,” Walker said.

It was announced that copies of the town’s vital records book are for sale for $40 at the Canton Historical Society. The book was compiled by Gregory S. Childs and is on display along with other historical memorabilia at the society building on Route 108.
