Private Gene Pilote retired Wednesday after 30 years with the Auburn Fire Department, most spent on the city’s ladder trucks. His fellow firefighters saw him off at the Center Street Fire Station. Pilote’s farewell dispatch message included the following: “Throughout the years, firefighter Pilote always showed up for work, happy to be there and enjoyed his shifts. He loved the camaraderie of his crew and liked doing the cooking for everyone. His unique sense of humor, perspective on life and wealth of institutional knowledge will be missed by all. “
