ANSWER: As many of you know, I hold libraries in very high esteem. Where would we be without them? I took a peek at the library’s website where many items and services are displayed. DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you have a computer whiz in your Rolodex? I’m having problems with hackers and can’t get online because of them. Any information would be appreciated. I don’t know where to start or who to trust. — No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: I’m reprinting my answer from Aug. 17 Sun Spots and adding to it. It seems that there has been a rash of computer hijacking and hijinks going on lately among our senior population. These scammers have no conscience and are only out to get your money. Never let entities you don’t know take over your computer and certainly don’t give them access to your checking account or pay for their so-called “services” with a credit or debit card. If you mistakenly pay for these scammers “to fix your computer” online, report them to your financial institution.

Jim Fish at Action Computer Services at 87 Essex St. in Lewiston (786-8740) said he sees five or six cases a month of people being scammed in this way. The cost involved in restoring your computer after one of these devils gets their virtual hands on it depends upon each situation, but it isn’t terribly expensive. Jim’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Jim has also advised that you NEVER call an 800-number for assistance with fixing your computer (unless it’s a company you know and have a membership with, like Geek Squad). It’s best to ask your friends who they recommend and go with a local company.
