Mt. Blue took a step back in the standings last year but looks to improve the long-term outlook starting this season under second-year coach Nate Quirion.
With a returning veteran nucleus that showed marked improvement as the Cougars’ 1-7 campaign unfolded, Caldwell Field should hold more excitement and surprises this year.
Securing the first playoff berth in three years will be challenging for the Cougars. While the region doesn’t appear to be as stacked as last year, when a 1-7 Brunswick team pulled off a quarterfinal upset and nearly did it again in the semifinals, it is still deep.
Defending regional champion Skowhegan remains the favorite with the return of one of the top quarterbacks in the state, Marcus Christopher. Brunswick returns all of the skill position players that powered last year’s late-season run. Lawrence, Cony, Brewer and Messalonskee will also battle it out for playoff spots.
In B South, Marshwood and Kennebunk have won the last six regional championships and are widely considered co-favorites in the region again.
