In his letter to the Sun Journal (Aug. 28), Benjamin Martin said that unnamed veterans characterized as “unbecoming” Jared Golden’s references to his military service in his congressional campaign.
I am a veteran, having served in the Marine Corps for three years, including a tour in Vietnam. As with many veterans, that experience profoundly influenced the way I have viewed my country and the world at large. It is as important as my education and professional work.
Since members of Congress will deal with matters of war and peace, Golden should mention his service as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan. His experiences can provide an informed perspective that Bruce Poliquin, who has never served, does not have.
Wrong as Martin’s statement is, it might have a positive impact. At the very least, it could inspire veterans in the 2nd District to support Jared Golden for the U.S. Congress.
