AUBURN — A Rockland woman remained jailed this week charged with shoplifting more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from Walmart.

Alyssa Bennett, 23, was charged with the theft of $1,072 worth of items over a period of days last week. It was believed she targeted electronics and other high-value items before she was caught by store security.

Bennett was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, where she was being held without bail.

Police this week posted Bennett’s jail photo on the department’s Facebook page as part of the Anti-Shoplifting Campaign. Others listed on the Auburn police page were accused of stealing items with smaller values, ranging from $13 to $81 from Walmart or Kmart.

It was not the first time Bennett made the news. Earlier this summer, she was charged with stealing an outboard motor from a boat parked in Rockland Harbor.

Police in Rockland said Bennett, along with a 38-year-old Rockland man, have been charged with similar thefts of outboards from several other agencies including Camden and Rockport.

That story was covered in the Penobscot Bay Pilot.

In 2014, Bennett and the same man were charged with attempting to bring strips of the drug suboxone into the Knox County Jail by hiding them in the spine of a Bible. A story about that arrest appeared in the Bangor Daily News.

Jail officials said Bennett is facing warrants on various charges from several Maine counties.
