PARIS — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Monday evening to tentatively schedule a special town meeting next month to vote on amendments to the Norway-Paris Solid Waste Board’s interlocal agreement.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the Town Office.

Selectman Gary Vaughn, who is chairman of the Waste Board, presented changes to the agreement to selectmen Aug. 27 and to Norway selectmen Sept. 6. The biggest change is adding two alternates to the six-member board.

Each town would add an alternate, who could only vote if there were tie. Depending on whether it is an odd- or even-numbered year, either the Norway or Paris alternate would vote.

Vaughn said the Waste Board also wants to change the wording so someone who has an immediate family member on the board is not eligible to join the board.

“We want to change the phrasing to ‘immediate family members,’” Vaughn said. “When you just say ‘family members,’ it doesn’t say if it means your wife, mother, brother, father, or your third or fourth cousins. Once you start getting into cousins, half of the town wouldn’t be able to be on the board because a lot of people have family around here.”

The board oversees the operation of the waste transfer station on Brown Street and the Frost Hill solid waste dump off Route 117, both in Norway.

Norway selectmen are expected to schedule a special town meeting for residents to vote on the amendments, Vaughn said.
