RUMFORD — The Board of Selectmen has voted to buy two vehicles from O’Connor GMC of Augusta.
One is a 2019 Chevrolet Tahoe for $36,300 for the fire chief. The other is a Western Star plow truck for $95,793, including a $12,000 trade-in. The total is $132,093.
The chief’s vehicle will haul trailers with equipment. Fire Chief Chris Reed said it will replace a 2008 SUV that has 115,000 miles on it and needs maintenance.
The plow truck replaces a 2007 International that Public Works Director Mike Mills said is worn out and would cost more to repair than it is worth.
Voting for the purchases at their Sept. 6 meeting were John Pepin, Peter Chase, Mark Belanger and Chairman Chris Brennick. Jim Windover was absent.
In other matters, Reed, who is also emergency management officer, applauded Road Commissioner Mike Mills for his work repairing Whippoorwill Road and a portion of the Hosmer Field walking trail after last October’s windstorm.
Reed said a team from the Federal Emergency Management Association investigated the damage to determine if the town could be reimbursed for repairs.
Meanwhile, Mills assessed the damage and did some engineering, which cost the town $20,000.
“He took upon himself to fix it, using sound engineering principles over his years of time, and did the project himself,” Reed said.
“When he was done, the (FEMA) engineers came and reported that Mr. Mills did an exceptional job and the town would receive the money back for the entire operation. So the town got the $20,000, plus the damage cost of $60,000.”
“His expertise is second to none,” Reed said of Mills.
In other matters, Briggs announced:
• Moon Tide Springs has repaid its Urban Development Action Grant of $69,567, including interest, that was used to build a new water bottling plant.
• The town has agreed to sell property at 125 Rumford Ave. to the Fraternal Order of Eagles for $35,000.
• The town received $1,500 from the Maine Municipal Association for Victoria Forkus’ summer internship at the Town Office.
• Butch Glover was appointed deputy chief at the Fire Department.
