For years, America has had many movements to bring the people closer to equity. People today are standing on the shoulders of others who fought and died so that citizens could have the “unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court would be a disaster for so many of those rights. The rights of women, of workers and protection of the environment would be put at serious risk.

From what is known of his record, it appears he would not be supportive of women’s reproductive rights. It is important that the accomplishments of women’s rights, including Roe v. Wade be protected.

I am also fearful of what his confirmation would mean for progress toward a health care system that is fair and accessible to all. Kavanaugh has shown disdain for the Affordable Care Act and protections guaranteed under that law. While the ACA isn’t perfect, it is a step forward in making sure people can’t be discriminated against just for being sick.

I don’t believe Kavanaugh would be a balanced voice on the Supreme Court and that would have an impact on communities in Maine and the nation for generations to come.

Sen. Susan Collins can vote to protect people’s rights by opposing Kavanaugh’s nomination. The people of Maine can only hope that she hears their voice, loud and clear.
