WEST MINOT — William “Bill” John Slattery, 79, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 10, after a great day working at his family’s farm and sharing dinner with the love of his life, Janice, his wife of 60 years. Bill was born Dec. 16, 1938, in Lewiston, the son of the late Thomas S. and Doris E. (Record) Slattery.

He graduated from Mechanic Falls High School, Class of 1958. On June 14, 1958, Bill married Janice E Millett. After graduation, Bill worked for the state of Maine in the store at Pineland. He then returned to the family farm to work with his brother, business partner and lifelong friend, Larry. Larry and Bill went through it all together. Bill’s incredible work ethic served him and his family well. Over the course of his working life, Bill was a dairy and vegetable farmer, woodsman, businessman and store owner.

Beyond work, Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time at his camp on Moosehead Lake. Bill shared many fall seasons in the North Maine Woods, hunting and trapping with Larry and Dwayne Bumps. Bill especially enjoyed his trips brook fishing and bird hunting with Frank Gammon.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Thomas.

Bill is survived by his wife, Janice; brother, Larry, and wife, Carolyn Slattery; sister, Carol, and husband, David Kimball; son, Wayne, and wife, Joni; daughter-in-law, Audrey; grandsons John and wife, Heather; Brandon and wife, Gina; Matthew; Jacob and partner, Vanessa; Michael and wife, Shannon; granddaughters Katie McAtee; Heather and husband, Jeffery Leonardo; great-grandchildren Emalyn, Cavan, Miles, Matthew, Claire, Chase and Isabelle.

Services will be held at the West Minot Union Church (corner of routes 119 and 124) at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, with a reception to follow at the West Minot Grange Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the West Minot Union Church. As neighbors to the church, Bill and Janice cared for the grounds and window boxes for many years. Arrangements are in the care of the Windham Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 434 River Road, Windham.
