AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library announces its teen program events for October.

Safe Voices Drop In Visit – 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4.
Each month, Jennifer from Safe Voice will visit the Teen Space to chat about relationships and work on projects. Have a topic to discuss? Let us know. This program is just for teens, ages 12-18.

Homework Help for Teens – 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 9, 23 and 30, and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Visit Teen Space for help in any subject. This program is just for teens in grades seven to 12 and will include a healthy snack. These times are reserved for those either getting a start on their homework or seeking help from the available tutor. Teens coming to hang out are asked to come at the conclusion of this program.

Gaming Hour – 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 10 and 24, Androscoggin Community Room. The library has Xbox and Wi-Fi and a small collection of games. Teens are welcome to bring their favorites, but only those rated T and E. Just for teens ages 12 to 18.

Teens! Snack Chat – 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, Community Room or Teen Space. Once a month, APL will have a conversation about topics which impact or are of interest to teens. At the same time, they will be prepare a healthy snack to enjoy. Meet in either the Teen Space or the Community Room, depending on their kitchen needs, so be sure to check the board on the first floor upon arrival. This program is for teens ages 12 to 18. 

Great Stories Club: “Empathy: The Cost of Switching Sides” – 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, Teen Space. The next series in the Great Stories Club will have participants read four books and participate in discussions and activities exploring what it means to be empathetic. Each book chosen encourages readers to explore the power of empathy, but will also help readers understand why empathy can be so hard to come by. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine Auburn/Lewiston clubhouse. Teens should contact Donna at the library or Joyce at the Boys & Girls Club.

Teens! DIY Takeover – 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, Teen Space. Each month, a different do-it-yourself project will be featured. This month, teens will decorate the Teen Space while working on a Halloween craft. The program will include snacks and is for teens ages 12 to 18.

College Night 2018 for teens and/or parents — 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18,  Androscoggin Community Room. Join admissions representatives from seven colleges and universities as they are facilitated by Jessica Whittier of Finance Authority of Maine.  Topics will include the differences in colleges represented, the application process, financial aid and more.

Following the panel discussion, there will be a college fair. During that portion of the evening, parents and teens can speak with the admissions representatives to get information specific to the schools of interest to them.

Colleges attending in 2018 include Bates College, Central Maine Community College, College of the Atlantic, Maine College of Health Professions, Maine Maritime Academy, University of Maine Orono, University of Southern Maine, Husson University, St. Joseph’s College, Thomas College, University of Maine Farmington and University of New England.

Tweens in the Teen Space – Noon to 2 p.m.Wednesdays, Oct. 24 and 31, Teen Space. Sixth-graders are invited on selected half-day Wednesdays to get a headstart on homework or socialize. There will be crafts or board games available.

Teen Matinee Movie: The Sixth Sense (PG-13) – 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, Androscoggin Community Room. This month’s selection is a perfect match for October. This program is just for teens ages 12 to 18 and will include a snack.

College Financing, the FAFSA and FAFSA Lab for teens and/or parents – 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, Computer Lab (second floor). In this session, as a follow up to College Night on Oct. 18, get help to better understand the financial aid process and be prepared to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. There will be information on ways to add to college savings and key strategies to minimize the cost of college. The program is presented by Jessica Whittier, a college access counselor at the Finance Authority of Maine with 17 years of experience helping students navigate their path to college. 

Although designed for teens and their parents, anyone who is thinking about financing their continuing education is welcome to attend.
