AUBURN – Charles Doncaster Bennett Jr., 89, of Auburn, Maine entered into rest peacefully on Sunday mornng, Oct. 14, 2018, with his children by his side.

“Don” was born in Montclair, N.J., to Charles Doncaster Bennett Sr. and Helen Bennett. He spent his childhood in West Auburn, Maine. He graduated from Edward Little High School and then served in the U.S. Navy. Shortly before his Honorable Discharge he met his wife of over 52 years Edith Lillian Gould of Auburn, Maine.
After their marriage Don and Edith moved to Hayward, California and then on to San Leandro, Calif., where they raised a son, Charles D. Bennett III, “Charlie”, and Betty-Elaine, “Betty”.
Don had a couple of jobs before he applied to Kellogg’s Cereal Company in San Leandro where he spent 33 years as a Maintenance Foreman. He was very proud of the fact that in 33 years he never missed a day of work.
Don retired from Kellogg’s at 55 in 1984 and moved back to Dyer Road in Lewiston, Maine. While returning the Ryder moving truck he was offered a “retirement” job doing driving and maintenance work for Ryder. He worked for Ryder for over 15 years.
Don and Edith then moved to Crystal Lake in Harrison, Maine. It was Edith’s dream to live on a lake. The log cabin they named “The Ponderosa” was where they boated, swam, noodled and hosted family and friends. Many beautiful memories were made.
After Edith’s death in 2004 Don returned to Auburn be close to family and spent his last years at Schooner Estates.
Over his lifetime Don loved his family and hard work. When not at Kellogg’s or Ryder this “Jack of all trades” enjoyed vegetable gardening, home improvement, repair and painting, snow blowing, yard maintenance, etc. Other special enjoyment came in the form of boiled lobster, steamed clams and pickled beets from the Chick a dee, along with hot dogs, lobster rolls and onion rings at Tabers. Over his lifetime, starting as a boy, literally 100’s of meals at those two restaurants! His successful career(s) provided the means to support the family enjoyment of almost yearly travel from California to Maine along with a special 50th Wedding Anniversary trip to Salzburg, Austria and Venice, Italy with his wife, children and grand children.
Don is preceded in death by his loving wife, Edith, his parents, Charles and Helen and his sister, Elaine Currie of West Auburn.
He is survived by his children, Charlie and (daughter in law) Carmen Bennett, Betty and (son in law) Everett White, his grandchildren, Nicole Black, Jonathan and Julia Bennett, Allison and Craig Snook, and three beautiful great-grandchildren, Ethan and Ada Bennett and Charlee Rae Snook. Don is also survived by his brothers Tom Bennett and Eugene Bennett and sister-in-laws: Betty Mason, Joan Gould, Jean Bennett, Shirley Bennett and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a celebration of life for Don in February for Family.
