I am a 55-year-old female survivor of ovarian and thyroid cancer, as well as cancerous polyps found in the colon. I have degenerative bone disease, fibromyalgia and arthritis. I can see the day when I will need help around the house. I do not want to go to a nursing home. I also do not want to burden my family. Access to home care services would make my future more secure, safe and joyful.
Maine families, including mine, have experienced taking care of loved ones at home. I care for a 76-year-old father who has lived with me for two years now and cannot live on his own anymore. He has multiple health issues, with cancer being the biggest issue we are facing right now. After lung surgery, we had a home care worker, nurse and a physical therapist come to our place. That was very helpful for the both of us. I believe most elderly people desire to keep their independence.
I believe that Maine seniors should be able to age at home with their loved ones. The universal home care initiative would ensure that. If people had help in the home, they could focus more on quality time with family members rather than worrying about them and caring for them.
That would be a good thing.
