100 years ago: 1918

Interest in official circles today was centered on the new peace note from Austria reported press dispatches, to be on its way to Washington through the medium of the Swedish government. Though no official announcement has yet been made it is considered certain that no answer will be made to the latest communication from Germany delivered yesterday to President Wilson. Though the Austrian note according to the unofficial text goes farther than any other exchanges with Germany, many officials see practically no signs of the expected break in the in the alliance of the central powers. In fact, it is believed that the Vienna and Berlin governments are working in harmony working in full knowledge of each other’s actions.

50 years ago: 1968

The new maternity section of the CMG Hospital welcomed its first arrival on Friday. The 11-pound, 11-ounce boy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Wheeler of North Leeds, is the grandson of a graduate of the hospital’s School of Nursing, Mrs. Doroathy Hobart, RN., office nurse for Dr. Rudolph Haas. The baby has been named Paul Frederick.

25 years ago: 1993

Alicia Ford, a seventh-grader at Lewiston Junior High was selected to attend a week of adventure at the U S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. Ford joined another Maine student, as well as two students from each of the other 49 states at the space camp, which was held Oct. 17 through 22. During the week-long educational program, Ford learned about space flight and the space program through lectures and seminars, and then put the Information to practical use while on tours and In simulators, The program teaches teamwork, decision making and leadership. Students participating in the program were in the fifth or sixth grade during the 1992-93 academic years. They also maintained a B average or the equivalent due to the academic demands of space camp.
