CANTON — The Canton Historical Society will host a weekend of events in observance of Veterans Day, beginning with a World War II-style dance party Friday evening.

The dance will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at the society building’s at 25 Turner St.

Society President Phyllis Ouellette said the 1940s USO-style party will feature music by Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra and the Andrew Sisters. Vintage clothing is encouraged, but not required.

Veterans and those younger than 18 attend for free. Others must have tickets, which are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. For tickets, call the society at 207-500-9893 or Ouellette 207-597-2058.

Food will be served and a there will be a cash bar serving beer and wine. All proceeds will benefit society programs.

“In addition to the salute to the veterans, the museum will be transformed into a whole display of Canton people who have served in the wars,” Ouellette said. “So, we’ve got something from the Civil War, something from World War II, and World War I.”

On display will be uniforms, letters, personal effects, medals and an encampment.

Hours of the exhibit are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a special Veterans Day presentation from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday. A talk titled “What They Carried” will focus on equipment and uniforms that World War II personnel used. The program will be presented by Doug Culver.

Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.

Committee members for these events are Sam Howes, Julie Martin, Prudy Adams, Elise Depres and Ouellette.
