100 years ago: 1918

Diplomats and officials here believe the terms of the armistice for Germany signed by the United States and the Allies in Paris yesterday are in the hands of Gen. Foch for presentation to the German commanders on the western front. There has been no explanation of the method determined upon of acquainting the Germans with the surrender conditions under which they may end the war. Until today it had been assumed that the terms would be sent to Berlin, through diplomatic channels because the appeal for an armistice came that way but the almost unanimous opinion in well-informed is that the matter will be handled entirely on the field by the allied supreme commander. Whatever may be the channel of communication. it is evident that no time has been lost and that an immediate reply is regarded as a possibility President Wilson, having canceled plans for casting his vote at Princeton, N.J., remained at the White House throughout the day.

50 years ago: 1968

As a result of a vote taken by the Auburn School Committee Wednesday night, the City Council will be asked to remove truck traffic from Academy Street where it passes Central School during school hours. James Randall, administrative, assistant to Schools Superintendent Lewis E. Webber, reported that faculty members at the school said the shifting of gears on trucks as they go Academy Street causes a disturbance in classroom activities.

25 years ago: 1993

The YWCA in Lewiston recently held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new pool at the East Avenue facility. Work on the project got underway as pool users and project organizers looked on. The pool will be enlarged from five to six lanes to accommodate the high volume of use through its multifaceted programs.
