100 years ago: 1918

“I think,” said a Lewiston woman, interested in social work, to the Journal, Monday, “that the Y. W. C. A. athletic league is one of the finest organizations ever promoted in these cities. I am delighted at the prospect of its permanent establishment here and it seems to me that it would go far toward solving the problem or the young girl, a problem I meet with so often, and have appreciable difficulty helping to solve.” The hearty approval of this woman is something distinctly worthwhile, and it is a pleasure to find it echoed on every hand. The tuition to the gym is very small, and the benefit, great. The league is open to women and girls, alike and now is the time to join.

50 years ago: 1968

On the recommendation of Auburn’s City Manager Woodbury E. Brackett, the council approved the installation of 10.500-lumen mercury vapor lights on three poles on Madison Avenue in the vicinity of the Lewiston-Auburn Children’s Home, to replace three small incandescent street lights. The total additional cost per year to the city would be; $49 20. Brackett said the change was recommended by the Central Maine Power Co. after a survey of the area.

25 years ago: 1968

Taxes will be the subject discussed at the meeting of the Androscoggin Advisory Council on Thursday. Joe Downey, assessor for the City of Auburn, will be the speaker. He will speak on “Taxes—present past, and future.” Any senior citizen in Androscoggin County is welcome to attend the meeting at Schooner Estates, 200 Stetson Rd., convening at 9 am.
