Tree lighting for Deacons’ Fund

WATERFORD — The Oxford County United Parish (North Waterford and East Stoneham Congregational Churches) will light the Tree of Peace, Joy and Love, an evergreen tree on the lawn of the North Waterford Church, by collecting donations for the Deacons’ Fund in honor or in memory of loved ones.

When contributions are made, paper cards with the loved ones’ names are placed on a tree inside the church, while outside on the lawn, colored lights are replaced with white. Thus through the Advent season, as memorials arrive, the tree slowly turns to all sparkling white.

All donations to the Deacons’ Fund are used to assist anyone in the community needing help buying fuel to keep warm during the winter, and also to send local children to camp in the summer.

Contributions may be made by mail to Milly Millett, Parish Treasurer, 346 Bisbeetown Road, Waterford ME 04088; checks should be payable to Oxford County United Parish, and include the name of the loved one being honored.

A Hanging of the Greens ceremony will be held at the regular church service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the North Waterford Church on Route 35. Those attending will decorate the church for Advent, sing carols and light the Tree of Peace, Joy, and Love. A coffee hour will follow. All are welcome.
