Courses for high schoolers to be offerred

ORONO — Beginning Jan. 22, 2019, the University of Maine will start offering spring courses for qualified high school juniors and seniors. 

Classes are taught by UMaine faculty and meet general education requirements of the University of Maine System, as well as the majority of colleges nationwide. Eligible students across the state can enroll with in a variety of live (Belfast and Orono) and online early college courses offered this spring semester. Over 70 courses are available in a variety of formats.

Bog Hoot Quilt Society meeting

MECHANIC FALLS — Area residents who enjoy crafts and companionship are invited to join community and church members at the Anglican Church of the Transfiguration (formerly the Mechanic Falls Congregational Church) on Elm Street for the Bog Hoot Quilt Society meeting.

The group meet is at 10 a.m. Tuesdays. The entrance to the downstairs is from the driveway to the church.

There are plenty of tables for quilting projects, an ironing board and a cutting board, and the coffee pot is on. Participants are invited to bring any project they are working on, including knitting, crocheting and needle crafts, or they may join in on church projects.

Catholic church offers Spanish Masses

PORTLAND — The Diocese of Portland’s Office of Hispanic Ministry has announced that Masses in Spanish will be celebrated in Portland, Lewiston, Bangor and Winslow throughout the year.

The Office of Hispanic Ministry assists the Hispanic community living and working in Maine by offering marriage and baptismal preparation, providing faith formation for adults and children, educating on social service supports in the state, and helping individuals and families to become more involved in parish life.

Spanish Masses in Lewiston are at 6 p.m. every Saturday at the Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, 122 Ash St. All are welcome.

Parish hall to hold blood drive

WINTHROP — There will be a community blood drive held from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall, Route 133.

The drive is open to all qualifying donors, and all are welcome. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800 GIVE LIFE. A form of identification is required.

VFW to hold kids’ Christmas party

JAY — There will be a children’s Christmas party for kids ages 10 and under from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335, 64 Jewell St.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, and the event will also feature face painting, arts and crafts tables and sweet treats. All are welcome to attend.

Church to hold Christmas Candlelight Service
