LEWISTON — Sam Frechette gave the L/A Nordiques an early boost, then Joshua Malone’s natural hat trick in the third period finished off the rival Maine Wild in an 8-0 NA3HL victory Wednesday at Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
The win for the Nordiques not only was their 14th in a row, but also clinched the first-ever Maine Cup against the Wild with one more game still to be played in the series for the Cup title. That third and final game is scheduled for Jan. 23.
Frechette scored the only goal of the first period, then soon followed Armand O’Keefe’s second-period goal with another one of his own to make it 3-0 just 6:33 into the middle frame. Crewz Berry and Colby Audette also scored in the second.
Malone tallied his trio of goals in a span of just under 10 minutes to round out the scoring with 6:20 left in the game.
Zack Mullen, Donovan Tehan, Trent Sheldon and JP Chauvin each dished out two assists, while Cole Ouellette, Hans Watson and Audette all had one.
Andrew Ghimpeteanu stopped 52 of 60 shots in net for the Wild, and Daniel Miller turned made nine saves for L/A to earn his second shutout of the season.
