BETHEL — Last Wednesday Bethel selectmen unanimously approved Loretta Powers of Newry as the next town manager.

No salary information was given at the meeting.

Powers’ official start date is Monday, Dec. 31. She will take over from interim Town Manager David Holt, who had held the position since August. Holt has been filling in since the departure of Christine Landes, who left to become city manager of Gardiner.

“I really like Loretta, she’s awfully pleasant, she knows everybody in town and from her experience in Newry and working around this town office I think she has a really good exposure to what she needs to know,” Holt said. “All you need is someone who understands the good folks here and can work with them to continue to do a good job.”

Powers was previously town administrator of Newry, and had served as Bethel’s deputy town clerk for the past year.

Bethel selectman Andy Whitney did not attend last week’s meeting.

Powers said one of her bigger goals is looking to keep Bethel residents pleased.

“I don’t have any dreams of big changes, but keep people happy and keep the town happy, and doing the best I can do for them,” Powers said.
