I am a big fan of images with layers. At the New Auburn Farmers Market last summer, I approached a mom shopping with her children and I asked if I could photograph them while they shopped. The children soon forgot about me as I captured little moments. A second scene started developing at the register behind them between the relaxed farm worker and another customer. After I shifted to include both interactions in my viewfinder, the small girl lifted a head of broccoli in triumph, having picked out her favorite vegetable. To me, this illustrates the entire farmers market experience.

A relatively quiet man, James Howard, when under hypnosis and flexing for his fellow under-hypnosis cohorts, offered a funny image. When he started his routine at the Durham AMVETS Hall in June, I set my camera to get good light on the people watching him, which threw our intrepid bodybuilder into silhouette. His posturing made this photo great. I knew as soon as I captured it that I had gotten something really special.

Our story was focused on the mascot at the Center for Wisdom’s Women in Lewiston: an anxious and nervous dog named Sophie. The women who use the center, many of whom have experienced abuse, related well to the small dog. The dog adores Klara Tammany, the center’s executive director, and kept her attention firmly focused on her during our visit. The moment Tammany dipped down and met Sophie face to face melted me.
