PARIS — State police are investigating the deaths of a man and a woman found in an apartment in Market Square on Tuesday night, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

The bodies were discovered in a first-floor apartment next door to Market Square Restaurant at about 8:30 p.m., he said.

They were identified Wednesday as Heather Bickford of Canton and Dana Hill of Paris, both aged 31. Hill was renting the apartment.

Bickford’s two children ages 8 and 2 months, were both in the apartment, but were not injured. Maine Department of Health and Human Services has custody of the children.

A friend of the couple called police to the apartment.

Detectives from the Maine State Police  are being assisted by the Paris Police Department and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office. State police evidence technicians will join the investigation Wednesday morning.

Autopsies are scheduled Wednesday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.
