LEWISTON — Police were searching for a pair of suspected gunmen along Lincoln and Oxford streets late Wednesday after shots were reported fired at about 10 p.m.

Police converged on the area near Place Ste. Marie after a report of a pair of masked men had fled in a car after threatening someone with a handgun.

Shortly after that call came in, it was reported the suspects had fired at a man in a pickup truck as he attempted to follow their car. It was also reported the suspects had crashed the car on Lincoln Street and that one of the gunmen might have fled on foot.

Police surrounded the parking garage at Chestnut and Lincoln streets, but the suspects were not found. The search expanded down Lincoln and Oxford streets, with police covering an eight-block area for the suspects and the dark-gray car they had been seen driving.

A pair of police officers searched behind Lebel’s Heating & Sheet Metal at 221 Lincoln St. after it was reported one of the suspects might have taken refuge there. No suspect was found.

Police gathered evidence found next to the parking garage, although they did not say what had been recovered. Other officers questioned witnesses at Place Ste. Marie.

The suspects were described as black males wearing hooded sweatshirts. One was said to have been wearing a black mask when the incident began.

An hour after the first report came in, police were still searching for the suspects. No further information was available late Wednesday.
