A 24 year-old man was killed last Thursday night (Jan. 24) after being hit by a truck on Stillwater Avenue.
According to police reports the accident took place at approximately 5:17 p.m. The operator of the truck, Eric Gifford, 54, of Bradley was at the light at the intersection of Bennoch Road attempting a left turn; at the same time, Dylan Cooper, 24, of Old Town was crossing the street and was struck by a plow mounted to the front of the truck. Emergency personnel were called, but Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the accident last Thursday’s fierce rain storm was still ongoing, with downpours and high winds making visibility difficult.
Traffic was rerouted around the scene of the accident for nearly four and a half hours while the accident was investigated. Stillwater Avenue was reopened at about 9:45 p.m.
The Old Town Police Department is reconstructing the crash with the assistance of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.
