(Update: The woman has been identified as Catherine Gauthier, 36, of Turner.)

TURNER — A woman was killed late Thursday after being hit by a vehicle on Route 4.

Police, fire and rescue crews were called to an area near Lower Street at about 9 p.m. for a report of a pedestrian who had been struck by a truck.

Early reports were that the victim was badly hurt and lying in the roadway. She was confirmed dead shortly after.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office was leading the investigation and remained at the scene late Thursday. They said the driver of the vehicle was cooperating with the investigation. Neither speed nor alcohol appeared to be a factor, according to Chief Deputy William Gagne.

Deputies were joined at the scene by Maine State Police and a Lewiston police officer, who assisted with an accident reconstruction.

The investigation was expected to continue into the night and possibly into Friday morning. Police shut down a section of Route 4 as their investigation got underway. That section, between Lower Street and Potato Road, was expected to remain closed for several hours.

Police did not identify the victim of the crash while they were in the process of notifying next of kin.
