OWLS HEAD – Joel Bernard Sherwood, died in September 2018, at his home in Owls Head, Maine. He was born August 10, 1970, in Portland, son of Daniel M. Sherwood and Jennifer Germaine (Sherwood) Yahr.

He graduated from Cheverus High School. At Cheverus he was active in sports, particularly football. He enjoyed friendships from his high school years. After high school Joel attended Northeastern University, participating on the sailing team. He transferred to Southern Oregon State College where he earned his degree in Business Administration. While there Joel was president of the Organization of Business Students.

Upon graduation he returned to his much loved, State of Maine, where he married and had a son, Jordan. He was employed by David DeLorme, restoring his motor sailor boat, The William Hand. He then worked for Project Resources Inc., designing the globe in Delorme’s Yarmouth publishing facility. He later worked for Fairpoint and Dragon Cement

Joel greatly enjoyed the ocean, being both in it and on it (scuba diving, boating and kayaking with his mother). Skiing and snowmobiling with his dad were favorite winter activities. Joel was a great cook, often competing with his sister to replicate the Italian recipes they learned as children. A great gift giver, he was sure to be the one to give the WOW gift for his nieces and nephew.

Joel is survived by his father, Daniel Sherwood and his wife Carole of Rangeley; mother, Jennifer Germaine Yahr and her partner Dr. Charles Mixter of Falmouth; sister Rebecca Doughty and her husband Phillip, nieces Katelyn and Kristyn and nephew Nicholas, all of Topsham; cousin Tony Jessen of South Freeport and his constant companion, his dog, Boston.

There will be a celebration of his life at The Portland Yacht Club, this spring, after which his family will scatter his ashes over Casco Bay.
