LEWISTON — Police on Friday were investigating the death of a 33-year-old man on Webster Street, but early reports were that the death was not suspicious.

Several people identified the man as a Lewiston police officer, although police officials did not confirm that Friday night. They said family was still being notified of the death of the man, whose body was discovered inside his Webster Street home at about 2 p.m.

Rumors began circulating that the man had been beaten to death when the popular Maine Scanner Alerts Uncensored Facebook page reported it that way shortly after the body was discovered.

Police said there was no truth to the rumor and that an investigation was ongoing.
