100 years ago: 1919

The ninth anniversary of Scouting in America is being observed by West Paris Troop #1. Saturday morning the Scouts and their master and assistant enjoyed a hike to Curtis Hill. In the afternoon they were busy making ready for the supper which was provided by mothers and others interested in the troop. Shortly after 7 o’clock, they were seated, Scouts occupying the central table, with Scoutmaster and assistant at opposite ends. The present membership of the troop was there, and a hearty welcome was given to several former troop members.

50 years ago: 1969

Rep. Louis Jalbert of Lewiston, the Legislature’s “Mr. Democrat,” opened a gift necktie from a Republican House member and discovered, he said Thursday, that he was wearing a tie emblazoned with Republican elephants.

25 years ago: 1994

Twenty members of the Poland Driving Club met at C.E. Jordan’s store last evening to make arrangements for races Saturday and also for the annual banquet and ice carnival. This club voted to have races on their well-known speedway on Middle Range Pond at the foot of Ricker Hill on Saturday afternoon.
