I write in response to the Sun Journal article “Amid fracas, leader steps down” (Feb. 10).
As chairman of the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council, I met with Adrienne Bennett the day before the article was printed. Her new board has to meet to see if they are going to continue with a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument. The project is on hold and has been for months while we tried to work with Dean Barron, the former head of Maine Fallen Heroes Foundation. The change in leadership was suggested by the Lewiston-Auburn Veterans Council and sent to the Hershal Woody Williams Medal of Honor Foundation. All funds raised for the project need to go through that foundation. Joyce Richmond, of Gold Star Mothers, and myself asked Barron for financials several times. He told the Veterans Council that it had no rights to the information. The council voted 13 to 1 to bring the monument to the Veterans Memorial Park.
