Auburn’s Centennial Celebration was kicked off today with the unveiling of a plaque in front of the Knight House, the oldest frame house in Auburn. “I proclaim this the beginning of our Centennial Celebration,” Auburn Mayor Clyde E. Goudey thusly kicked off the 100th birthday celebration of the city of Auburn this morning, as a handsome sign was unveiled at the site of the city’s oldest frame house, the 173-year-old Knight House. The plan is to move the house from its present site on Knight Street to a more suitable location in the Urban Renewal Area and to turn it into a historical site and information center. About three dozen people — many of them active in historical work — gathered in the raw weather for the ceremony. John White, president of the Auburn Heritage Inc. project greeted those on hand and introduced Mayor Goudey. Mr. White told the assemblage of its hope to relocate the house somewhere near West Pitch. Also speaking was Miss Beatrice Neal, Auburn historian and a director of the Androscoggin Historical Society and Gen. Ralph B. Skinner, a member of the Auburn Citizens Advisory Committee who is assigned to the Knight House project. Miss Neal told those on hand of the history of the Knight House and something about those who have lived in it. Gen. Skinner praised those who have worked on the project.
