POLAND — Regional School District 16 directors Monday night awarded Great Falls Construction of Gorham a $4.7 million contract to renovate the Bruce M. Whittier Middle School section of Poland Regional High School.

PDT Architects of Portland, which planned the renovation, was previously awarded a contract to furnish the addition.

Voters from Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland approved a $5.7 million bond in November 2017.

The proposal calls for adding several classrooms to the middle school, eliminating three modular buildings housing six temporary classrooms. This is the first phase of the construction.

The addition is expected to be finished in December.

The second phone involves moving some shared middle school-high school offices to a central location in the building, creating a single, secured entrance for the middle school and Poland Regional High School.

Great Falls Construction was one of three pre-qualified firms who bid on the project. It bid $4.6 million. The others Blane Casey for $5.58 million and Gannestson for $5.22 million. Both firms are from Augusta.
