Lewston Bridge Club results

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Bridge Club met at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, in the Armory Senior Center with three tables in play. The winners were Mike Quinn and Les Buzzell ; second place were Cindy and Bob Kirchherr.

The Lewiston Bridge Club meets regularly each week. All interested persons are invited and a partner is always guaranteed. For more information, call Pat Quinn at 207-461-5788.

Extension free home garden newsletter available

ORONO — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension publishes a free monthly newsletter for home gardeners — from novice to expert — with practical, research-based information available online for anytime access.

The Maine Home Garden News is published March through October, archived by year and available for subscription. Each issue includes a seasonal to-do list; articles on fruits, vegetables, native plants, lawn care, trees and shrubs; and links to videos and other resources. Book reviews, profiles of Maine gardeners and in-depth features on pollinators are scheduled for upcoming issues.

Bridgton Art in the Park spaces available

BRIDGTON — Good spaces are still available for this year’s Art in the Park. Applications can be downloaded from www.gallery302.com or picked up at Gallery 302 at 112 Main St.

The gallery is also looking for two new food vendors from a nonprofit group. One space is across Highland Road near the lake. Grill cooking is allowed. The other space is in the park and would be good for ice cream or foods that don’t need cooking.

Margaret Chase Smith Library essay contest 

SKOWHEGAN — The Margaret Chase Smith Library has announced the topic of its 24th annual essay contest.  As the Pine Tree State commemorates the past during its bicentennial year of 2020, Maine high school seniors are invited to look to the future and share ideas of how they would propose to make the state “the way life should be” for young people so that more of them will choose to live in a place with one of the oldest populations in the nation.

Entries are due by April 1 and decisions will be announced by May 4. Prizes are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, $250 for third place and five $50 honorable mention prizes.

City Democrats to discuss primary, caucus

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Democratic City Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at the Lewiston Armory, 65 Central Ave.  Parking is available in the parking lot and on alternate sides of surrounding streets.
In addition to regular city committee business, members will discuss the recent presidential primary and the party caucus.

Age-Friendly Community Committee, APL, co-hosting movie event

AUBURN — On Thursday, March 12, the Age-Friendly Community Committee and the Auburn Public Library will co-host the movie “The Quiet Man” at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., Auburn. Everyone 50+ is welcome to attend.

People may bring their own lunch, or purchase one at the library café. Beverages will be provided. Doors to the lower conference room will open at 11:30 a.m. The movie will start at noon.

Due to a lack of parking space, seniors are encouraged to come to the Auburn Senior Community Center in Pettengill Park at 11 a.m. to get on the bus for the library. Those people who want to take the bus, should call Jamie Longley at 207-333-6601, ext. 2108, to get on the list.

 

‘Thank a farmer’ event planned at Leeds school

LEEDS — Leeds Central School is planning an event from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, March 13, to celebrate local farmers. The theme is “If you ate today, thank a farmer.” Seven local farmers have been invited to come to the school and to read to students. The goal is to create partnerships with local farmers and show them how much they are appreciated. Staff have selected books that will help the children learn about how important farmers are.

Legion to hold indoor yard sale

MECHANIC FALLS — American  Legion Post 150, 41 Elm St., will  hold an indoor yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14. There will be a bake sale and raffle tables.

 

DAR to host program on women’s issues

LEWISTON — Mary Dillingham-Burnt Meadow Chapter, DAR, will sponsor a women’s issues presentation at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14,  in the Fusion Restaurant of Ramada inn, Pleasant Street. The public is invited.
