DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wonder if Sun Spots readers might help me solve “the case of the unmarked photos.” They are two very pretty colorized photos in frames that look original. I inherited them many years ago. I had them rematted and have enjoyed looking at them for many years.

I suspect these photos were widely sold in the 1930s here in Maine. One photo depicts sailboats in a harbor and would be impossible to identify, but the other one, which is in a matching frame and thereby may be related, shows a working dock with some cars and buildings in the background. The cars look to be of 1920s or ’30s vintage and there is a low building with “Roger’s Lobsters” painted on the roof. There is also one boat in the harbor named “Gloria,” but the town name below the boat’s name is blurred. The sign “Roger’s Lobsters” provides the only real clue as to where this might have been taken. Does anyone have any ideas? — Pat, Norway

ANSWER: I love these kinds of mysteries! Readers, please write in if you have answers or can provide more clues.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m wondering if someone might have an older knitting pattern like the one my grandmother always used to make mittens. They were knit flat using a single strand of worsted yarn on the cuff then two strands were used for the body of the mitten. We always had a pair in our stockings on Christmas morning and they were the warmest mittens! Any help would be appreciated. Please contact me at mummaroy0811@gmail.com — Vanessa, no town

ANSWER: I’m sure there will be more than one well-seasoned knitter in Sun Spots land who can help you out. Also take a peek at this tutorial and pattern for flat-knitted mittens: https://gina-michele.com/2018/01/flat-knit-womens-mittens-free-knitting-pattern-2.html

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the individual who asked for reading recommendations in the Jan. 20 Sun Spots, I’d like to suggest the book, “The Enclave,” a historical novel based in Lewiston/Auburn that focuses on a woman’s journey toward self-discovery and self-determination. It’s available at the Lewiston and Auburn Public Libraries, Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick, and Turner Public Library. The sequel, “The Legacy,” is available only at the Lewiston Public Library, but I believe you can request both novels in e-book format at all libraries, and both books are also available for purchase online. — Suzanne, no town

ANSWER: Those sound really good, especially because they are local! I’m going to hunt down a copy. Remember, if you have an online library account, you can also request library books through the Minerva system, through your local library or at https://minerva.maine.edu/. Now is the time to snuggle in with your favorite warm beverage and a lovely book! Let us know what you’re reading. I’m curious!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The person looking for Ziploc baggies (Feb. 1 Sun Spots) can find them at Dollar Tree in all sizes. — No name, no town

ANSWER: That’s where I usually get mine too. Our reader may be looking for the specific brand but I have found any brand works just fine.
