STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Blanca Millan scored 11 points in the fourth quarter as the University of Maine women’s basketball team rallied from a nine-point deficit and beat Stony Brook 54-49 in an America East game on Sunday.
Millan finished with 17 points for the Black Bears (15-2, 12-2 America East), who had their nine-game winning streak snapped by Stony Brook (11-4, 9-3)on Saturday. Maeve Carroll added 16 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and eight rebounds for the Black Bears.
Maine trailed 41-32 before going on an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter to take the lead. The lead grew to six points late, before Stony Brook’s Hailey Zeise hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left and had a chance to tie it, but missed two 3-pointers before Millan hit a pair of foul shots with five seconds left.
India Pagan had 12 points and Asiah Dingle 10 for Stony Brook.
(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 66, LSU 59: Destanni Henderson scored 19 points and Aliyah Boston added 12 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks as the Gamecocks (17-2, 12-0 SEC) beat the Tigers (8-10, 6-6) in Columbia, South Carolina for their 31st straight Southeastern Conference victory.
The Gamecocks haven’t lost in league play since falling to Arkansas in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals in March 2019.
Boston finished with her 10th double-double this season and 23rd of her career as South Carolina won its 12th straight over LSU. Zia Cooke added 13 points for the Gamecocks.
(6) TEXAS A&M 80, (16) TENNESSEE 70: Destiny Pitts had a season-high 18 points and the Aggies (19-1, 10-1 SEC) used strong free throw shooting late to hold on for a win over the Volunteers (12-5, 6-3) in College Station, Texas.
It’s the seventh straight victory for Texas A&M and improves the Aggies to 8-0 against ranked opponents this season.
(7) BAYLOR 60, TEXAS 35: Moon Ursin and Queen Egbo had double-doubles for No. 7 Baylor as the Big 12-leading Lady Bears (16-2, 11-1 Big 12) beat the Longhorns (14-6, 8-5) in Waco, Texas.
NaLyssa Smith had 14 points for the Lady Bears, including the first basket of the game that put them ahead for good, when off opening tip she leaped to get a lob pass from DiDi Richards and competed the layup before coming out of the air. Richards had 10 assists.
(9) MARYLAND 95, NEBRASKA 73: Ashley Owusu scored 25 points, Diamond Miller added 24 and the Terrapins (14-2, 10-1 Big 10) made Brenda Frese the all-time winningest coach in program history with a win over the Cornhuskers (9-10, 7-8) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Frese, 500-130 in her 19th season with the Terrapins, passed Hall of Fame coach Chris Weller, who won 499 games from 1975-2002.
(10) ARIZONA 75, WASHINGTON 53: Sam Thomas scored 20 points, including hitting a career-high six 3-pointers, and Aari McDonald also had 20 points to help the Wildcats (14-2, 12-2 Pac-12) run their winning streak to six games with a win over the Huskies (5-11, 2-11) in Tuscon, Arizona.
Cate Reese had 12 points, Shaina Pellington had 11 points and Thomas added a season-high seven rebounds for the Wildcats, off to their best league start in program history.
(15) INDIANA 58, ILLINOIS 50: Ali Patberg scored 16 points and the Hoosiers (13-4, 11-2 Big Ten) overcame a horrible shooting day to turn back the Fighting Illni (3-13, 1-12) in Champaign, Illinois.
The struggles of leading scorer Mackenzie Holmes (18.7 points a game), a former Gorham star, emphazied the Hoosiers’ struggles. The 62% shooter — which is among the top five in the nation – was 1-of-16 shooting and put up seven points.
(23) SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 73, ORAL ROBERTS 61: Myah Selland scored a career-high 30 points and the Jackrabbits (17-2, 10-0 Summit Conference) scored the last 10 points of the game to hold off the Golden Eagles (16-2, 4-6) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Compared with Saturday’s 82-60 win over the Golden Eagles, the Jackrabbits had to work much harder but made all the plays down the stretch.
(24) GEORGIA 82, MISSOURI 64: Gabby Connally scored 29 points, sinking six 3-pointers, Jenna Staiti scored 12 of her 18 points after halftime and the Bulldogs (16-4, 8-4 SEC) broke away from the Tigers (7-9, 3-8) in Columbia, Missouri.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
MAINE 6, MERRIMACK 1: Ida Kuoppala had two goals and two assists as the Black Bears (7-7, 7-7 Hockey East) beat the Warriors (1-15, 1-15) in North Andover, Mass.
Celine Tedenby, Ali Beltz, Elise Morphy and Rachel Enzler also scored for Maine. Enzler and Morphy each added two assists, while Loryn Porter had 23 saves.
SOUTHERN MAINE 5, BECKER 3: The Huskies scored three goals in the third period after the Hawks had rallied to tie it on their way to a win in Gorham.
Zoe Solomons, Georgie Snow and Maddy Young scored in the third for Southern Maine. Chelsea Skluzacek and Julianne Nelson both scored in the second.
Shelby Reach, Cassidhe Wozniak and Clare Conway scored for Becker.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
(3) MICHIGAN 67, (21) WISCONSIN 59: Isaiah Livers scored 20 points and Hunter Dickinson had a double-double as the Wolverines (14-1, 9-1 Big Ten) returned from a three-week layoff and rallied from a 14-point deficit to the Badgers (15-7, 9-6) in Madison, Wisconsin.
Michigan scored the game’s final eight points and pulled ahead for good with 1:46 left on a tiebreaking putback from Dickinson, who had 11 points and 15 rebounds. Wisconsin missed its last seven shots.
The Wolverines hadn’t played since a 70-53 victory at Purdue on Jan. 22. Michigan announced the next day that it was pausing all athletic activities after several people linked to the athletic department tested positive for a COVID-19 variant that transmits at a higher rate.
DRAKE 51, (22) LOYOLA CHICAGO 50: Tremell Murphy scored 17 points, including the go-ahead basket in overtime, and the Bulldogs (20-2, 11-2 MVC) rallied past the Ramblers (18-4, 13-2) in Des Moines, Iowa.
Murphy’s layup with 2:50 remaining put the Bulldogs ahead for good, 49-48, as the Missouri Valley Conference powers split a back-to-back set of games in Des Moines. Loyola had two shots blocked in the final 15 seconds before Murphy made the clinching steal and was fouled.
