A 5-year-old girl left critically injured and in a coma following a crash this month involving Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid is now awake, her family said in an online post.
The news was delivered Monday in a brief post on the GoFundMe page for Ariel Young, who has been hospitalized since the Feb. 4 crash.
Reid, who is the the son of Chiefs Coach Andy Reid, was the team’s outside linebackers coach. He was initially placed on administrative leave immediately following the crash, but is now no longer employed by the team. His contract expired in recent days and was not renewed.
Kansas City police said the crash happened near the team’s training complex next to Arrowhead Stadium when Reid’s truck slammed into two vehicles on the side of a highway entrance ramp, injuring Ariel and another child inside one of the cars.
Reid underwent surgery for injuries not detailed by the team.
Police said Reid told investigators he had “two or three drinks” and had a prescription for Adderall when the crash occurred. Police have said they are investigating whether Reid was impaired.
The crash occurred three days before Kansas City played in the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay, losing to the Buccaneers. Reid did not travel with the team for the championship game.
PANTHERS: Carolina is releasing two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kawann Short, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.
The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team has not announced the decision, which does not come as a surprise.
Short has played in just five games over the last two seasons due to injuries to both shoulders, which twice landed him on injured reserve. He was set to count $20.8 million against this year’s salary cap, but the Panthers will save about $9 million by releasing him before June 1 — money that could be pegged to use the franchise tag on offensive tackle Taylor Moton.
JAGUARS: Jacksonville added to its personnel staff Tuesday by hiring Michael Davis as senior personnel executive, Trip MacCracken as director of roster management and Drew Hughes as player personnel coordinator.
DOLPHINS: Kicker Jason Sanders has a new contract to go with his All-Pro status.
Sanders, the Dolphins’ leader in career field goal percentage, signed a $22 million extension through 2026. The deal announced Tuesday includes $10 million guaranteed.
Sanders was chosen All-Pro after tying the franchise’s single-season points record with 144 in 2020. His 36 field goals made ranked second in the NFL and second in Dolphins history, and his field goal rate of 92% was a team record.
His career totals are 77 of 89 for 87%. Sanders was a seventh-round pick by Miami in 2018.
