Brother Joseph Richard Jacques O.P.

MONTREAL, Canada – Joseph Richard Jacques, O.P. died peacefully on Feb. 11, 2021, at the Montreal General Jewish Hospital. He was the son of Joseph Richard and of Cécile Dubois of Lewiston. He was baptized on Dec. 21, 1939 in SS. Peter and Paul Church in Lewiston where he spent his childhood. Throughout his life, he was always very attached to his hometown.Brother Richard joined the Canadian Province of the Dominicans in January 1961 and made his vows on August 4, 1962. After his first profession, he spent 14 years in the St John the Baptist Priory in Ottawa where he mainly worked at the reception of the Priory. He was then assigned to the Centre Dominicain of Montreal to become the assistant director of the Oeuvres de Saint-Jude. In 1989, he moved to St Albert the Great Priory where he had been treasurer for many years and where he was elected member of the conventual council for several mandates. In all his assignments, Brother Richard was a devoted and dedicated friar. His brothers give thanks to God for the presence among them of such a brother and the quality of his service. He was truly a son of St Dominic. Brother Richard was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by two brothers, Daniel Jacques and wife Aileen of Huntsville, Ala., and Robert Jacques and wife Rachel, of Lewiston. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held in the conventual church of St Albert the Great Priory in Montreal on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. Due to current circumstances, only those who have been explicitly invited may participate in the religious ceremony. When it becomes possible, the ashes will be interred at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Lewiston. May he rest in peace!
