Charles Raymond Howe

BRYANT POND – Charles Raymond Howe passed away on March 11, 2021, at the age of 98. “Charlie” was born at home on the “Farm” in Bryant Pond on Feb. 17, 1923.

He was predeceased by his mother Eva Buck Meserve, father Harry W. Howe; sisters Evelyn Merrill, Inez Howe, and brother Richard Howe; his wife, Lois of 73 years; and his sons, Paul and Dave Howe.

He is survived by his daughter Janis Howe and her partner Sandra Marino, and his youngest son Scot Howe; granddaughters, Siri Gott and husband Kevin; great- granddaughter Samantha and great grandson Ian. Sonja Priola and great- granddaughters Payson, Madeline, and Fiona.

Charlie attended Woodstock High School. He was a pitcher for the Bryant Pond town baseball team. He served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II from January 1943-1946. Upon which he received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Service Star. He was honorably discharged as a corporal T-5.

After returning from the war, he married Lois McInnis in Augusta, May 3, 1947. He was employed at Mann’s Mill for 11 yrs., then at Oxford Paper Co. in Rumford for 30 years. Upon retirement he had a nice home built in Bryant Pond where he enjoyed his model trains, bowling, gardening and being a good neighbor. Always cut, hauled, split and stacked his own wood. He attended Bryant Pond Universalist Church serving as co-advisor to youth group. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, most of all having his family around him for stories and laughter.

He will be remembered by his meekness and sharp humor, as well as his hankies and gardening tips. He was often seen shirtless and shoeless, and taking Lois for a ride on his golf cart. His goal was to leave you smiling. “LUFF-YA”.

Special thanks to Beacon Hospice Staff for the sense of humor and genuine concern for him. His last request was to remain in his home which was granted by his daughter.
