FARMINGTON — American singer and songwriter Solange’s album, “A Seat at the Table,” is the next topic featured by the University of Maine at Farmington’s New Commons Project via Zoom from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 17.

Events centering on “A Seat at the Table” are free and will run through March 22. Because of COVID-19 precautions, the following open to the public events are all remote.

Released by Saint Records and Columbia Records, the studio album combined a variety of collaborators including rappers, singer-songwriters and musicians, and is comprised of funk, soul and contemporary R&B. Solange describes it as “a project on identity, empowerment, independence, grief and healing.”

It debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and topped the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The lead single, “Cranes in the Sky,” won a Grammy Award in 2016 for best R&B Performance. The album was ranked 312 on the “Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Times” list.

Dr. Daphne Brooks, professor of African American, Theater Studies, American Studies, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Yale University, will give a live online lecture and discussion about “A Seat at the Table” in context of contemporary Black feminist music.
