100 Years Ago: 1921
Lewiston and Auburn Sun newsboys have been very busy during the last three weeks and have obtained 387 new subscribers. Cash prizes ranging from one dollar to four dollars have been awarded to 24 newsboys. The Lewiston and Auburn Sun boys are all working for another special prize which will be given out the first of April. The first prize will be a new suit of clothes and there are several other prizes, such useful articles for newsboys in a whole outfit consisting of a rubber coat, rubber hat, storm king rubber boots, sweater, and shoes.
50 Years Ago: 1971
The meeting of the YW-Wives on Wednesday evening at the Kate J. Anthony House was highlighted by a fashion show of wigs. Mrs. Dorothy Peacock of Wigs Unique, which provided the wigs for the event, was commentator and Trudy Breau and Diane Auger assisted. They demonstrated the proper way for a wig to be fitted and styled and pointed out that the synthetic hair is easier to handle than human hair but human hair wigs are fine for special occasions. Different types shown were the tulip, lioness, gabby, shag, missy and doggie wigs. Several of the YW-Wives who participated were Wanda Smith, Mary Ann Norcross, Sandra Coutermarsh, Barbara Laprise, Rita Lalemand Rose Marcotte, Sandra Jacques, Barbara Mushiit, Norma Ouellette, Jeannine Betsch, Dorothy Noel, and Joline Pelletier.

The students of Molly Ockett Middle School in Fryeburg have a new map to aid their studies. Actually, it’s an old map, a large five by five-foot map of Maine dating back to 1861. The map was a gift from Bruce Thurston of Lovell “because I thought the school would like it, and I had no place for it.” Thurston found the map in the local landfill, where it had been placed by a resident remodeling the old Slab City Road schoolhouse in Lovell about 20 years ago. ”‘The map was printed in 1861 by J.Chace Jr. and Co. of Portland. and designed by H.F. Walling. It features not only a detailed representation of the state, counties and towns, but also separate small maps of major metropolitan areas of the time. These smaller maps surround the state of Maine. There is also a map of the country as it appeared before the Civil War, along with one of the world. Charts showing mileage and population statistics also are represented.
