Violist Nathan Hillman will perform at the Oasis of Music will begin at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, in the downstairs chapel of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, 122 Ash St., in Lewiston.  He will be accompanied on piano in a performance of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata by James Parakilas. Hillman also will perform the two bourées from Bach’s suite for solo cello number five, on viola.

The violist, composer, and arranger, has always been passionate about music, and is especially interested in performing music by underrepresented composers. He is currently pursuing a B.M. in Viola Performance at Peabody Conservatory under Choong-Jin Chang. Originally a violinist, it was Janet Ciano that drew him to the viola, and ultimately into the rich world of chamber music, attending Kneisel Hall and Next Generation chamber music camps for many years.  Hillman is a three time winner of the Bagaduce Composer Competition in Blue Hill and has premiered a number of original works at a concert in 2012. He has performed as principal violist in various orchestras in Maine and New York.
Prior to attending Peabody, he taught chamber music at Bay Chamber Music School, often featuring under-played, yet wonderful, chamber works.  He has performed in Union College’s Taiko drumming ensemble, rung handbells with Penobscot Bay Ringers, and is also a self-taught pianist and accordionist.  Hillman has extensive experience arranging music to feature the viola, both in solo and chamber music contexts, and not limited to the classical genre. It is via these realms of music that Nathan aims to inspire others to love music as he does, through performance, pedagogy, and collaboration.
James Parakilas is professor emeritus from Bates College, and  is active in music performance and promotion with LA Arts.

Admission to the Oasis of Music is free, with donations accepted. COVID restrictions of mask-wearing, social distancing are observed, with a maximum number of attendees set at 35.
