Makenzi, 13, cleans a baluster Friday at the Maine State Building at Poland Spring Resort in Poland before May 22’s open house. Makenzi and her sister Kaydence polished 786 balusters in the building, which was built in 1893 at the Chicago World’s Fair to showcase Maine craftsmanship and materials. After the fair, it was disassembled, brought to Maine and rebuilt. The Poland Spring Preservation Society uses a network of volunteers to help with cleaning, staffing the gift shop and leading tours. Volunteers of all ages are welcome. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal Buy this Photo
