The Maine State Legislature has set the first public hearings on the national popular vote bills (LD 1330 and LD 1384) for Tuesday, May 11. Now is the time to submit testimony, which can be done online, with no need for driving to Augusta.

The details of how this interstate compact would work are found at nationalpopularvote.com. Essentially, once enacted by states totaling 270 electoral votes, we the people would elect the next president and vice-president by popular vote across the whole country. The Electoral College would still be constitutionally in place (it’s very hard to change that), but we could fix the shortcomings of our current electoral college “drama.”

Not only that, but every vote by every citizen would count equally in the national popular vote plan. Now is the time to weigh in and give testimony in support of this legislation, as it offers a true solution to our election mishaps. I would like people to go to mainelegislature.org/testimony and let their voices be heard.
