A large contingent of firefighters from several surrounding towns, the Maine Forest Service and a helicopter have been called to battle a wildfire that broke out in the Oxford County community of Brownfield on Monday afternoon.

The fire was located off Farnsworth Road on Frost Mountain, which is off Route 113. Mutual aid was requested from several neighboring towns, including Fryeburg, Denmark, Hiram, Sweden, Lovell and Bridgton, according to a message posted on the Lakes Region Maine Fire and Rescue’s Facebook page and Twitter account. Smoke rising from the wildfire could be seen from the Eastern Slope Regional Airport in Fryeburg.

David Cullinan, the airport manager, said the wildfire ignited in a difficult location for firefighters to reach, on the side of Frost Mountain about two miles from the airport. Cullinan said that firefighters had to use ATVs to reach the fire.

The cause of the fire and the number of acres affected were not immediately clear.
