Robert graduated from Stephens High School in Rumford, Maine. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany, and later started his lifelong career as a machinist for General Electric in Bangor, Maine. Robert and his ex-wife Cindy settled in Dover-Foxcroft, where they raised their three daughters and Robert maintained lifelong friendships from the area.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, James Conti, Michael Foreman, and Charlie Newell.
